Celebration of Atonement

Called by God to serve and witness to all in

response to God’s grace.

Rev. Tina Koenig Ray, BCC, Pastor

————————————————————

From Your Pastor…

"Time Passes By", sung by Kathy Mattea is such a wonderful song. I believe the words are, "Time passes by, people move on. In the blink of an eye they’re gone." These words have new meaning for me as I begin the year without my crazy, loving, tender, maddening, handsome, wonderful husband by my side. I’m sure that many of you who are reading this have been in similar situations. If you haven’t, let me tell you, it stinks. But time marches on, the sun comes up and the sun goes down. We need to figure out how we are going to live in the in-between time.

I’m sure I could find a country song that would fit what I’m thinking . . . hmm, of course, the one that Garth Brooks sings, "The Dance". "I could have missed the pain, but then I’d had to have missed the dance." We really don’t want to miss this dance. Jesus tells us that he is the Lord of the Dance and he calls us to boogie. Whether we dance a mournful dirge or a joyful polka, we are called to dance to the tune of life, yea, even New Life. When we are thoughtful, when we are playing, when we feel sad or happy, we are called to waltz. "Dance then, where ever you may be. I am the Lord of the Dance said he. And I’ll lead you all wherever you may be, yes I’ll lead you all in the Dance said he."

So let us dance to the wonderfully sacred Gospel tune. Let our lives be a holy and sacred gift to our Creator. We may limp, we may run or crawl; we may mis-step, oh wait, no, there are no mis-steps in this dance; we may dance in a wheel chair or for a while we may have to have others dance for us. But Dance we must. We are called by Christ, the Dancer, to follow his lead and to dance to a tune that is different than that of this world. Whatever verses we may put to the song, the chorus is always the same, "Love your neighbor as yourself and God with all your heart." It matters not if the tune is an Irish Jig or a Latin rumba; an orchestra or a sweet simple flute could be playing. The urge to dance the Dance of Life is world wide and heartfelt.

As another favorite singer of mine puts it, "If you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance."

From the Council President ...

Much has happened--first, thank you for all the prayers and good wishes I received since I broke my ankle. I'm doing well--today (Tuesday the 13th) the cast was removed and now I have an ankle brace which I wear for 5 weeks. Second, I have moved from my home of 47 years--new address is 748 Aspland Court, Rockton, IL 61072. Phone 815-624-6163. I'm still not completely settled but am working on it with the help of family and friends.

Here at Atonement we have the church decorated in anticipation of Christmas. The Council will be working on the budget very soon. The pledges total $74,754 as of December 4. Good!! Has anyone not turned in their pledge yet? These are important so that the Council will be able to prepare a reasonable budget. To keep you informed of our financial status, each newsletter will give year-to-date totals of income, expenses, and whether we are over or under budget.

Time and Talent forms are available in the Klingberg Chapel. Fill one out to let us know what you are doing for Atonement now and also what you might like to do. Time given is as important as money given. What's that old saying? "Time is money."

The annual meeting will be January 29 after church. Everyone should bring finger/snack foods and we will have coffee and juice available. The annual report will be available at church on January 22 so that everyone can take one home and review it before the annual meeting. The agenda for the meeting will be set at the January 12 Council meeting--if anyone has something that they wish to have on the agenda, please give me the information in writing before January 12. All items to be discussed must be on the agenda.

There are three 3-year positions to be filled on the council and one 1-year position. Would you like to serve Atonement in this way? Talk to one of the Council members or the Pastor.

Yearly Committee reports for the annual report are to be completed and given to Pattye by Monday, January 2. Designate a member of the committee to do this, or perhaps the chairman of the group can give us a report so that we can keep all members of the congregation up to date with the current activities of these particular committees.

Have a blessed Christmas season. See you in church and at the Annual Meeting.

God's Blessings -- Carole

The Parable of the Spoons

A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said, Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like. The Lord led the holy man to two doors. He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in.

In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew, which smelled delicious and made the holy man's mouth water. The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful, but because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering.

The Lord said, "You have seen Hell."

They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew, which made the holy man's mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, "I don't understand."

"It is simple," said the Lord, "it requires but one skill. You see, they have learned to feed each other. The greedy think only of themselves."

Think about this...

Start with a cage containing five monkeys. In the cage, hang a banana on a string and put a set of stairs under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb toward the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all of the monkeys with cold water.

After a while, another monkey makes an attempt with the same result-all the monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon, when a monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys try to prevent it.

Now, turn off the cold water. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his horror, all of the other monkeys attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs, he’ll be assaulted.

Next, remove another of the original five monkeys and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm. Again, replace a third original monkey with a new one. The new one makes it to the stairs and is attacked as well. Two of the four monkeys that beat him have no idea why they weren’t permitted to climb the stairs, or why they’re participating in the beating of the newest monkey. After replacing the fourth and fifth original monkeys, all the monkeys that have been sprayed with cold water have been replaced. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs.

Why not? That’s the way it’s always been around here.

A loss to the Atonement Church family...

Juanita Hanson December 10, 2005

—————————————

A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin, 5 and Ryan 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. "If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.'" Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, "Ryan, you be Jesus!"

Thank You!

We are so grateful for the way the community has joined with Caritas in the collection and distribution of Thanksgiving meals to families in need. There were 546 families who signed up for Thanksgiving groceries and as I write this the last of the meals are going out to those in need.

It has been an extremely busy season for Caritas and the hard work of all our volunteers helped to make it a joyful experience. Each team of workers provided support as together we shared a bounty of food with families who struggle for the basic necessities of life. I wish to thank everyone who cooperatively made this a true season of Thanksgiving in Beloit’s Stateline area. It is a privilege to share that a spirit of love, cooperation and service is rendering an impact on many families whose life struggles are difficult. Thank you for what you have given to others.- Judith Petree, Executive Director

Hello Deena;
There is light in Liberia and in my house. More over, we have just ended our general and presenditial election. Liberia has the first female president in Africa, she is a wonderful lady. She is called Ellen Johnson Serlief, very qualify woman with long years of experience. We started the generator and it worked very well. On the first day, I had over one hundred persons watching video at my place. I will send you picture next time. Many thanks to you and the Beloit Lutheran Church for bringing lights in my home and community in this part of our world. Thanks, your friend-
Pastor William Boymah

The concrete front entrance steps are beginning to deteriorate and need to be replaced. The original concrete steps were restored several years ago with a 2 inch topping which is now wearing off and becoming a safety hazard. The best quote for the work is $4,400. We will set up a separate account to finance this priority project and anyone wishing to contribute can do so by placing a marked envelope in the offering plate at worship. We plan on having the work completed in early spring.

A single guy decides life would be more fun if he had a pet. So he went to the pet store and told the owner that he wanted to buy an unusual pet. After some discussion, he finally bought a talking centipede, which came in a little white box to use for his house. He took the box back home, found a good location for the box, and decided he would start off by taking his new pet to church with him.

So he asked the centipede in the box, "Would you like to go to church with me today? We’ ll have a good time." But there was no answer from his new pet. This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few minutes and then asked him again, "How about going to church with me and receive blessings?" But again, there was no answer from his new friend and pet. So he waited a few minutes more, thinking about the situation. He decided to ask him one more time; this time putting his face up against the centipede's house and shouting, "Hey, in there! Would you like to go to church with me and learn about The Lord!?"

A little voice came out of the box.....................

"I heard you the first time! I'm putting on my shoes."

A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child's work. As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, "I'm drawing God." The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like." Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, "They will in a minute."
