Celebration of Atonement

Called by God to serve and witness to all in

response to God’s grace.

Rev. Tina Koenig Ray, BCC, Pastor

————————————————————

From Your Pastor…

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,

God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the

mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness

into God’s marvelous light.

Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people;

once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

I Peter 2:9-10

You, the people of Atonement, are a royal priesthood, a holy people, God’s own people. You are not a Beloiter or a Clintonite. You are not a Parker graduate or a Purple Knight. You are not a retiree or a corporate executive or a stay at home mom or a farmer. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28

Together we are God’s people, it doesn’t matter if we give all we own to the church or our widows mite, just so we give what we truly can with a joyful heart. It doesn’t matter if we wear jeans or a suit to worship, just so we come and worship God with our brothers and sisters in the faith. It does matter if we gather together or not. How can you maintain healthy relationships with your family if you never see your family? We are God’s people, we are God’s children. Our brother Jesus invites us to gather together around the welcome table.

True we are not a very big group of people, in reality about 200 strong. But look at what we have done. We finished 2005 with about $7,000.00 to the good. We have an average worship attendance of 76 folks. Out of our 200 or so folks over half of our confirmed members communion and contribute. We met our benevolence and fulfilled our financial commitment to the synod. We continue to host Hands of Faith and Y.A.G. We continue to enjoy fellowship together. We who once we not a people, are indeed a people. God’s people.

We are God’s people not just for kicks and giggles. The writer of I Peter continues with, ‘in order that’. You knew there had to be an ‘in order that’ didn’t you? In order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of God who has called you out of darkness into God’s marvelous light. Wow!

Proclaim!? Is that word even in the Lutheran vocabulary? Yes it is! We need to tell our friends and neighbors; our classmates and co-workers, even our relatives, that God is marvelous, that God loves them so very much that Jesus was sent to be our brother and our savior.

Come, people, let us tell all who will listen the Good News of Jesus Christ and the new life they can have through him. In a society where it matters who you are and what you do, people are aching to hear a word of peace and unity and welcome for who they are on the inside, not what they can bring or give.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,

God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the

mighty acts of him who called you

out of darkness

into God’s marvelous light.

Congregational Cluster Groups

To enhance and foster greater collegiality among pastors and A.I.M.’s (Associates in Ministry) of the South Central Synod of WI, our Bishop, Pastor George Carlson, has created Congregational Cluster Groups. This group will meet on a monthly basis and essentially replaces the South East Area Ministry, which was deemed too large geographically. The Congregational Cluster Group to which Atonement now belongs is South Rock and includes the ELCA churches in the towns of Albany, Beloit, Brodhead, Clinton and Orfordville. I have been appointed the convener for the group.
From the Council President ....

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, January 22, after church to discuss the budget for the 2006 year. On Sunday, January 29, we will have our annual meeting, at which time we will elect Council members, select Synod representatives, and approve the budget for the 2006 year.

The 3rd annual Chili/Soup cookoff is February 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. Join in for good food and fellowship at this fund-raiser. Matching funds by Thrivent.

Don't forget to turn in the Time and Talent Sheets. Find them in the Klingberg Chapel.

Thanks to all for the pledges for this coming year. It's makes the Council's job of setting a budget so much easier when we know how much money we can count on.

God's Blessings -- Carole

Atonement’s 3rd Annual Winter Chili & Soup Cook-off and Bake Sale will be from 4-7 PM, Saturday, February 4th. This is a fund raiser event for this winter’s heating bill. A sheet of tickets to sell are included in this month’s newsletter, and packets of tickets are available at church as well. Prices are $4 for adults, and $1 for kids under 10. Guests will be given a bowl and spoon and are free to sample all the entries then vote on their favorite recipe, with the winner receiving a $100 bond. Matching funds by Thrivent.

GREETINGS TO MY ATONEMENT FAMILY

from Wales, Wisconsin.

It is too hard to believe that on the 15th I will be halfway done with internship. Time flies way to fast when you’re having fun – and that I am. These past 5 ½ months have confirmed that I am on the right path in my faith journey.

The first few months at All Saints Lutheran Church [ASLC] were spent getting acclimated... there are so many families, so many ministries, so many Sunday morning liturgies with just as many choirs – it’s been overwhelming! However – I wouldn’t want any other internship site or intern supervisor. Pastor Larry has been an inspiration and a great mentor for me. To bring everyone up-to-date on what I’ve been doing to keep myself busy here....

From the beginning, I have been preaching every 3rd Sunday [2 weeks off/1 week on]. On the Sundays that I am not preaching, I do the children’s sermon and write my own intercessory prayers [ASLC doesn’t use the ones that are pre-written].

Each Sunday of the month we use a different liturgy during our morning worship [8:15 and 10:30]. I’m familiar with three of them [LBW, WOV, and Holden], but one liturgy is new and it’s taken me a bit to get use to it.

Each Sunday a different music group is involved in worship.... there is Youth and Adult Choir, Bell Choir [they are awesome!], Ensemble [strings, brass, and percussion], and Praise Band [electric guitars, drums, sax, and lots of modern spiritual music]. I’m currently singing in the Praise Band [Pastor Larry plays the drums and/or electric guitar]. It’s quite loud, but seems to be a favorite with the younger families.

I am teaching Bible Study to our high school youth on Sunday mornings, Adult Bible Study on Wednesday mornings and Thursday evenings, and the Lord’s Prayer section of confirmation to over 50 confirmation [7th & 8th ] students.

Besides sitting at council meetings, I am involved in several ministry teams – Youth Board, Women’s Recharge, and my very favorite, Lay Ministry. Lay Ministry is my Internship Project that is required at seminary. I am currently organizing "Ministry of the Month" celebrations, holding workshops to explain our program, and will begin instructing a group of people to go out and talk with active/in-active members, along with new members. Simply defined – Lay Ministry is a Gift-based ministry. We will ge matching members God-given gifts and talents with current ministries, large and small. [We’ve already had a successful example. We have a new member who has a gift of sewing and she didn’t know how to "fit" in. A new ministry has just been formed called "Cross" Stitch to make new banners, acolyte robes, comfort pillows for Am. Cancer Society, quilts for LWR, and baptismal banners for babies].

Speaking for baptisms...... I am definitely getting my "baby-fix". We have had 10+ baptisms since I’ve been here. This last month I have been making pre-baptism visits along with new member visits. I also have been doing hospital and shut-in visits [we have no one in a nursing home – only 12 members over the age of 65].

Christmas was wonderful .... 3 services on the Eve and 2 on Sunday morning [I preached on Sunday]... TOTAL attendance for all 5 services was in the 700+ AWESOME! In January my supervisor went to Haiti on a mission trip for 10 days and I went "solo." On January 15th, Bishop Paul Stumme-Diers licensed me to preside at communion.... I cannot explain the honor and privilege I felt that morning. On Christian Unity weekend [January 21-22] we had a pulpit swap with the Catholic church down the road from us. Are you sitting down? I preached at their Saturday 5:00 mass and was invited to commune with them. Times sure have changed.

So you can tell that I'm having the time of my life here... and it’s called "work?" Yet, I miss my family at Atonement and wish you all the very best and God’s continual blessings. Thank you to those who remembered at Christmas with cards, those who call on occasion to be sure I’m doing alright, and a special thank you to Gabby for coming to visit me for a weekend. Each and everyone of you is in my prayers.

"My Name Is Meth"
Potawatomi Traveling Times, December 15, 2005, page 3.

I destroy homes, I tear families apart,
take your children and that’s just the start.
I’m more costly than diamonds, more precious than gold,
the sorrow I bring is a sight to behold.
If you need me, remember I’m easily found.
I live all around you in schools and in town.
I live with the rich, I live with the poor.
I live down the street and maybe next door.
I’m made in a lab, but not like you think,
I can be made under the kitchen sink.
In your child’s closet, and even in the woods.
If this scares you to death, well it certainly should.

I have many names, but there’s one you know best,
I’m sure you’ve heard of me, my name is crystal meth.
My power is awesome, try me you’ll see,
but if you do, you may never break free.
Just try me once and I might let you go,
But try me twice and I’ll own your soul.
When I possess you, you’ll steal and you’ll lie,
You do what you have to – just to get high.
The crimes you’ll commit for my narcotic charms,
will be worth the pleasure you’ll feel in your arms.
You’ll lie to your mother, you’ll steal from your dad.
When you see their tears, you should feel sad,
But you’ll forget your morals and how you were raised.
I’ll be your conscience, I’ll teach you my ways.

I take kids from parents and parents from kids.
I turn people from God and separate friends.
I’ll take everything from you, your looks and your pride.
I’ll be with you always, right by your side.
You’ll give up everything - your family, your home,
your friends, your money, then you’ll be alone.
I’ll take and take, till you have nothing more to give.
When I’m finished with you, you’ll be lucky to live.
If you try me be warned this is not a game,
if given the chance, I’ll drive you insane.
I’ll ravish your body, I’ll control your mind,
I’ll own you completely, your soul will be mine.
The nightmares I’ll give you while lying in bed,
the voices you’ll hear, from inside your head.
The sweats, the shakes, the visions you’ll see,
I want you to know, these are all gifts from me.

But then it’s too late and you’ll know in your heart,
that you are mine and we shall not part.
You’ll regret that you tried me, they always do,
but you came to me, not I to you.
You knew this would happen, many times you were told,
but you challenged my power and chose to be bold.
You could have said no and just walked away,
If you could live that day over, now what would you say?
I’ll be your master, you will be my slave.
I’ll even go with you when you go to your grave.

Now that you have met me, what will you do?
Will you try me or not? It’s all up to you.
I can bring you more misery than words can tell,
come take my hand, let me lead you to hell.

The Wolves

One evening, an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between "wolves" inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup to come out of the jar. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the phone. "It's the minister, Mommy," the child said to her mother. Then she added, "Mommy can't come to the phone to talk to you right now. She's hitting the bottle."

Thank You!

The concrete front entrance steps are beginning to deteriorate and need to be replaced. The original concrete steps were restored several years ago with a 2 inch topping which is now wearing off and becoming a safety hazard. The best quote for the work is $4,400. We have set up a separate account to finance this priority project and anyone wishing to contribute can do so by placing a marked envelope in the offering plate at worship. We plan on having the work completed in early spring.

Shirley Goodnest

A mom was concerned about her kindergarten son walking to school. He didn't want his mother to walk with him. She wanted to give him the feeling that he had some independence but yet know that he was safe. So she had an idea of how to handle it. She asked a neighbor, Mrs. Goodnest, if she would please follow him to school in the mornings, staying at a distance, so he probably wouldn't notice her. Mrs. Goodnest said that since she was up early with her toddler anyway, it would be a good way for them to get some exercise as well, so she agreed. The next school day, Mrs. Goodnest and her little girl, Marcy, set out following behind Timmy as he walked to school with another neighbor boy he knew. She did this for the whole week. As the boys walked and chatted, kicking stones and twigs, Timmy's little friend noticed the same lady was following them as she seemed to do every day all week Finally he said to Timmy, "Have you noticed that lady following us to school all week? Do you know her?" Timmy nonchalantly replid, "Yeah, I know who she is." The friend said, "Well, who is she?" "That's just Shirley Goodnest," Timmy replied, "and her daughter Marcy." "Shirley Goodnest? Who is she and why is she following us?" "Well," Timmy explained, "every night my Mom makes me say the 23rd Psalm with my prayers, 'cuz she worries about me so much. And in the Psalm, it says, 'Shirley Goodnest and Marcy shall follow me all the days of my life', so I guess I'll just have to get used to it!"
