Celebration of

ATONEMENT

Newsletter of Atonement Lutheran Church,

Rev. Tina Koenig Ray, BCC, Pastor

"Called by God to serve and witness to all in response to God’s grace."

———————————————————————————————————

From the Pastor…

Dear friends in Christ,

I realized that I while I started shortly after Billy died, I have not been sharing the journey of my first year without Billy Ray with you. I think that between the running around, the surgeries (I think the extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth counts as surgery) and trying to get back up to speed regarding ministry, I have not been checking in with myself regarding Billy Ray.

I also realize that ya’ll must be getting tired of hearing me say, "OK, but tired," every time you ask how I’m doing. I remain thankful for your continued patience. It seems that the closer the anniversary of his death gets the more discombobulated I become. Every time something ‘goes wrong’ at the house I get frustrated and angry because he’s not here to help bear the load. Lately I’ve been feeling a lot like Job.

I know from my faith history, the history of my relationship with God, that I will survive and prosper. Jeremiah says, "’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you & not to harm you, plans to give you hope & a future." Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) I cling to some of the precious hymns that Christianity has fostered, such as the words found in "When the Storms of Life Are Raging (Stand By Me).

It appears to me that my spirit is resting. "Jesus said to his disciples, ‘…come away to a deserted place … and rest awhile.’" Mark 6:31 (NSRV) Jesus knew that the human spirit needs rest and refreshment in order to be all that it can be. So, if I seem a little distant or distracted, not quite myself, my spirit is resting. With rest comes renewed vigor of mind, body and spirit.

I know there are many here at Atonement who are feeling like Job. You bear the burdens of grief; of too much to do; of medical situations and restlessness of spirit & mind. You too need to hear the words from Jeremiah that God has a hopeful future for you. When the storms of life rage around you or within you, you need to know that God does indeed stand by you. Better yet, God holds you in strong arms. God wants you to take a moment or two, whatever "a while" is to you, and rest. Imagine God holding you close in sturdy arms. You lean in close and hear, & feel, the beat of God’s heart. Your hair is ruffled by unbroken puffs of air as God breaths on you. You feel the warmth of the Holy Spirit seeping into your weary bones. You find that your own heart begins to beat in time to God’s. A slow steady beat. Solid. Calming. Life-giving. Your heart begins to speak to God’s heart and tell God all that you clutch and cling too. You give it all to God. God takes it from you and places it within God’s own all encompassing heart, at the center of which there is a cross. The grief and weariness and anxiousness are gone. What ever plagues you has vanished.

"Jesus said to his disciples,
‘…come away to a deserted place …
and rest awhile.’" Mark 6:31 (NSRV)

Believing that pain has a purpose,

I do not question either its place in the universe

or my fate in becoming so familiar with pain through disease.

Quite often, people who mean well will inquire of me

whether I ever ask myself, in the face of my diseases, "Why me?"

I never do.

If I ask "Why me?" as I am assaulted by heart disease and AIDS,

I must ask "Why me?" about my blessings, and question my right to enjoy them. The morning after I won Wimbledon in 1975 I should have asked "Why me?" and doubted that I deserved the victory.

If I don't ask "Why me?" after my victories,

I cannot ask "Why me?" after my setbacks and disasters."

-- Arthur Ashe, the tennis champion

who contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion

Christians - By Maya Angelou

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I'm not shouting "I'm clean livin'."

I'm whispering "I was lost,

Now I'm found and forgiven."

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I don't speak of this with pride.

I'm confessing that I stumble

and need Christ to be my guide.

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I'm not trying to be strong.

I'm professing that I'm weak

And need His strength to carry on.

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I'm not bragging of success.

I'm admitting I have failed

And need God to clean my mess.

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I'm not claiming to be perfect,

My flaws are far too visible

But, God believes I am worth it.

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I still feel the sting of pain.

I have my share of heartaches

So I call upon His name.

When I say... "I am a Christian"

I'm not holier than thou,

I'm just a simple sinner

Who received God's good grace, somehow!

Why Go To Church?

A Churchgoer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the

life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all."

This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher: "I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals.

But I do know this... They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!

When you are DOWN to nothing....God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

LOT'S WIFE

The Sunday School teacher was describing how Lot's wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt, when little Jason interrupted, "My Mommy looked back once, while she was

driving," he announced triumphantly,

"and she turned into a telephone pole!"

Memo to South-Central Synod Congregations

From Global Connections Committee,

Pastor Dan Odden (Dekorra Lutheran Church, Poynette)

Re: Your Congregation and partnership with Lutherans

in Northern India

With what can we compare the kingdom of God,

or what parable will we use for it? Mark 4:30

Amid all the flurry of activity after Easter and before the Synod Assembly, Bishop Carlson asked congregations to consider contributing to a special project of the Synod that is before us now. We are planning a delegation to go tou our Companion Synod, the Northern Evangelical Lutheran Church of India, in order to develop our connections with two Lutheran hospitals and a school in India. I have been asked to lead this group of educators and healthcare professionals to get some hands-on interaction between their ministries and ours. The trip will be late October to early November.

You can help. Do you have a person to recommend for such a two-week mission? We especially need one or two more healthcare professionals.

We also need some funding help. The bishop’s note challenged us to raise $100 per congregation.

Congregations are mission centers directed outward in Christ’s name. We need a variety of mission initiatives to neighbors near and far. We are called in Christ to be global in our mission. God’s sending knows nothing about borders. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America provides a mandate to us to participate together in global mission through the Companion Synod program. Find a way to participate.

God has gifted us with amazing capacities to interact with brothers and sisters in all the world. They invite us to be "walking partners" with them. Blessings upon you in the many mission connections that you have in the web of relationships that come from being part of God’s great family.

THE LATEST HABITAT HOUSE UPDATE: The Thrivent Builds Homes project is progressing well at 837 Oak Street in Beloit. All the outside walls are up for the first floor and the garage. Last Saturday we had several brave volunteers starting on the roof and working in the extreme heat (95 degrees).

Next Saturday we hope to finish the roof areas and start on interior walls. We desperately need workers to help build this house! As you know, 50% of the labor must come from Lutherans for Thrivent to release the grant that covers the cost of building this house. Don’t worry about your skill level. You don’t need building experience to contribute. There are experienced people on site to guide you through. It is very rewarding to watch a house being built from the ground up and knowing you had a part in it, no matter how small. Many hands do make light work.

Some of our churches are collecting money for shingles. I hope that is coming along. Soon we will need the money for drywall, flooring, and doors. Your church should have a bulletin board display with the cost of these items on it. Please see your Thrivent Church Champion about this (Except St. John’s which has met their financial goal already).

August 12, August 19, and September 2 are still open slots for providing lunch to the workers. Please call Eric at the habitat office to take one of these spots. Thank you to St. John’s for volunteering to feed the crew on July 29, and Our Savior’s did a great job with lunch on July 8th.

How do you get in on the building? 1) Just show up at 9:30am this next Saturday and most every Saturday through November or 2) Call the habitat office at 754-1228 and talk to Eric or leave a message or 3) Make www.rockcountyhabitat.org one of the favorites on your computer so you can get weekly updates and e-mails or 4) Call Kathy Swain at 365-7603.

See you at the build!

Habitat for Humanity needs your help! A display is set up in the Klingberg Chapel with floor plans and samples of the tile and carpet to be used in the house being constructed at 837 Oak Street. Each square foot is only $3-if you would like to purchase flooring for a room, a portion of a room or just a couple of square feet, donations can be made to the collection can located by the display.

OPEN YOUR HEART AND HOME to a Korean or European exchange student for the coming 2006/2007 school year. Caring host families (with or without children) are needed to provide food, a bed and a loving home for one or two semesters starting in late August. EMF students have medical insurance, spending money for their personal expenses and expect to share their host family's daily life including household responsibilities. They speak English, are well-screened and eager to experience life in America. Their stay here is sponsored and supervised by EMF (Educational Merit Foundation), a non-profit, educational exchange program. Interested host families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible because of the limited space available for foreign students in American schools. For more information on EMF students, please call Marie-Claude Dijoud now at 1-800-467-8363 or visit our web site at www.emfusa.org
