Celebration of

ATONEMENT

Newsletter of Atonement Lutheran Church,

Rev. Tina Koenig Ray, BCC, Pastor

"Called by God to serve and witness to all in response to God’s grace."

From the Pastor…

Well, spring is officially here! At least I hope so, yesterday little fluffy white flurries came down while I was doing yard work. After the quiet time of winter our schedules are gearing up with (do they ever slow down?) graduations, confirmations, baptisms, weddings. Roll out those crazy days of spring and summer!

I would like to suggest that we take a moment or two to pause between ‘social seasons’ and to remember our baptism and the recently celebrated resurrection of our Lord. Take a deep breath and breathe in the life giving spirit that has been poured out for you. Feel the embrace of the arms that were spread wide on a cross for you. Contemplate what freedom from the power of death means to you and for you in your every day life. I’d like to present for your edification the following article. Enjoy. Breathe. Live. Love. Relax.

Statio
Arden Mahlberg

In business, there has developed the ideal of "seamless transitions," that it is good to set things up so people move from one system to the next without even noticing. There is no gap or seam between them. While appealing in some respects (it gives the illusion that nothing is changing)

it does not serve us well as a model for how to live. It denies that change is taking place. This is how unresolved grieving occurs, for instance. You just keep going as if nothing is different. But Jesus' birth did not have a seamless transition. Nor did the start of his ministry. Nor did his death when the temple curtains were torn. God's transitions are not seamless. Far from it.

The Benedictines teach and practice statio, which is also the opposite of seamless transitions. Statio is the practice of pausing between events. My car now reminds me to take statio. It is a hybrid, so at the stop light, it turns off instead of idling. Nothing needs to be done, so it shuts off, to be reawakened when I push on the accelerator. And so I make a point to stop thinking, to pause, focus on God and the traffic light that will tell me when I need to proceed.

As a practice integrated into our lives, statio helps us take sacred time. It allows us to fully appreciate what came before, stop to rest, focus on God, and then make an intentional entry into the next activity- the pregnant pause between movements of the symphony.

Statio helps us live more intentionally. Each thing we do deserves its own identity instead of being morphed together. Statio also happens to be less stressful for us.

Bishop’s Election

On Thursday May 3rd, 2007, the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin will begin the process to elect a new bishop. Bishop Carlson has served faithfully and is not seeking re-election. There are several candidates for bishop and it is important that you know who they are and voice your opinion. For information about the candidates please go to: http://www.bishop-election-scsw-elca.org/Candidates.php

There were two synod wide forums held as ways to meet the various candidates. If you go to http://www.bishop-election-scsw-elca.org/_Forums.php you will find a video of the first forum. The second forum occurred on 4/15 and should be available shortly.

After you review the above information, please feel free to voice your opinion to either Charletta Affedlt, Andrea Garvey or myself (Pastor) regarding whom you feel the holy spirit is calling to serve our synod as bishop for the next 6 years.

THANK YOU!

To my Atonement family & especially Char & Karen-the banner is beautiful and the thoughts and memories that go with it are treasured. These past four years have been wonderful and your support, prayers, encouragement and friendship have meant so much to me. Like the banner, you will go with me as I begin the next part of my journey. The banner will be a constant reminder of my Christian family in Beloit. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! -Deena Laird

CHILDREN' S ANSWERS ABOUT ANGELS:

Jade, 6--I only know the names of two angels. Hark and Harold.

Gregory, 5--I hear angels all the time in my dreams. And I'm sticking with that no matter how many people tell me I'm crazy.

Molly, 8 –Everybody’s got it all wrong. Angels don't wear halos anymore. I forget why but scientists are working on it.

Olive, 9 --It's not easy to become an angel! First, you die. Then you go to heaven then there's still the flight training to go through. And then you got to agree to wear those angel clothes.

Matthew, 9 --Angels work for God and watch over kids when God has to go do something else.

Henry, 8 --Angels don't eat but they drink milk from holy cows.

Jack, 6 --Angels talk all the way while they're flying you up to heaven. The basic message is where you went wrong before you got dead.

Daniel, 9 --When an angel gets mad, he takes a deep breath and counts to ten. And when he lets our his breath, somewhere there's a tornado.

Regan, 10 --Angels have a lot to do and they keep very busy. If you lose a tooth, an angel comes in through your window and leaves money under your pillow. Then when it gets cold, angels go north for the winter.

Sara, 6 --Angels live in cloud houses made by God and his son, who's a very good carpenter.

Jared , 8 --Angels are girls because they gotta wear dresses and boys didn't go for it.

Vicki, 8 --What I don't get about angels is why, when someone is in love, they shoot arrows at them.

The new ELW books are here!

The Worship & Music Committee wants to let the congregation know that the new hymnals have arrived, and we hope to have them in the pews on June 3rd. Char Affeldt and Doris Betz are installing the name plates. We plan to have a "moving day" on Saturday, June 2nd at 9 AM. We’ll pick up the old hymnals and put them in the chapel, along with copies of older hymnals. If you want an older hymnal for yourself, either the green or red, feel free to take them. We’ll keep around 20 copies of the old books, and the rest will be recycled.

Also from Worship and Music: In the works is a fundraiser for Hands of Faith in December. David Ramsey has written a Christmas Cantata, with the idea of a performance by a mass choir from all of the Hands of Faith churches. It’s in the planning stages at this point with a tenative date of December 15th at 6 PM.

Adopt a Street Program 2007

Following the fellowship on the designated Sunday mornings we will be picking up our portion of Milwaukee Road. It only takes about an hour from the time we leave the church and return. The more hands the better! Wear or bring your old/work clothes to church. Jeans or shorts are appropriate and expected. Bring a pair of gloves and wear comfortable shoes. Following the pick up those who are able can go to a restaurant for a well earned breakfast!

APACHE SEASONS

There was an Indian Chief who had four sons. He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly. So he sent them each on a quest, in turn, to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away.

The first son went in the winter, the second in the spring, the third in summer, and the youngest son in the fall.

When they had all gone and come back, he called them together to describe what they had seen.

The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent,

and twisted.

The second son said no it was covered with green buds

and full of promise.

The third son disagreed; he said it was laden with blossoms that smelled sweet and looked so beautiful,

it was the most graceful thing he had seen.

The last son disagreed with all of them; he said it was ripe and fruitful.

The man then explained to his sons that they were all right, because they had each seen but only one season in the tree's life.

He told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one season and that the essence of who they are and the pleasure, joy, and love that come from that life can only be measured at the end,

when all the seasons are up.

If you give up when it's winter, you will miss the promise of your spring, the beauty of your summer, fulfillment of your fall.

Moral: Don't let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest. Don't judge life by one difficult season.
Persevere through the difficult patches

and better times are sure to come some time.

The India Children’s Choir is coming to Beloit!

The performance will be at 7 PM, August 2nd at Our Saviors Lutheran on Bluff Street, hosted by Atonement, Our Saviors, St. Paul Lutheran, Luther Valley and Faith Lutheran. The Choir consists of 22 boys and girls, ages 8 to 12, selected from thousands of children in schools sponsored by Bibles for the World through its Partnership Ministries in northeast India. These children are the decendants of a former headhunting tribe, which was entirely transformed by the Gospel into "Hearthunters" for Jesus Christ. They are touring America to say "Thank You" for your generosity, and to seek your partnership in the worldwide ministries of Bibles for the World. If you would like to preview the quality of the Choir’s musical, please to to www.bftw.org to view a video clip and hear what others have said about the Choir’s impact on their lives.

Jesus

In chemistry, He turned water into wine.

In biology, He was born without the normal conception.

In physics, He disproved the Law of Gravity when He ascended into heaven.

In economics, He disproved the Law of Diminishing Returns by feeding 5000 people with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread.

In medicine, He cured the sick and the blind, without administering a single dose of drugs.

In history, He is the beginning and the end.

In government, He said that He shall be called Wonderful Counselor, and Prince of Peace.

In religion, He said no one comes to the Father except through Him.

Jesus had no servants, yet they called Him Master, had no degree yet they called Him Teacher; had no medicines, yet they called Him Healer.

He had no armies, yet rulers feared Him.

He won no military battles, yet He conquered the world.

He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him.

He was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today.
