Celebration of

ATONEMENT

Newsletter of Atonement Lutheran Church,

"Called by God to serve and witness to all in response to God’s grace."

From the Council President ....

Here we are right in the middle of "after Easter" and just before summer. That time where we are making our summer plans for getaways and vacations as soon as school is over for the summer. It's the time when most everything slows down at our church, too.

However, (here it comes, the old "don't forget your offerings for church" message) I would like to ask everyone to make a special effort to check out our financial statement posted on the wall of the Klingberg Chapel. It happens to be a little reality slap for each of us.

As we all know we haven't increased our attendance numbers in the recent past so our financial numbers have suffered. And I do realize that many of our members are on a fixed income but we still need to pay our bills during the summer like everyone else.

Now here's the old message; please "don't forget your offerings during the summer months; we need it." Thank you.

God's blessings
Bruce

THANK YOU!

Dear Pastor Tina & fellow Christians: I will be eternally grateful for the love and spiritual guidance you have shown Emily over the past four years. Being part of your church family has given her a home away from home when lonely, encouragement when frustrated, and caring indiviudals who live their faith. When Emily left for college, I prayed for God’s continual presence in her life. He blessed her with your church. Peace be with you-Louise Andreae and Family

Congratulations to Ashlee Pearsall and Josh Owens! They were married in Ohio on April 21st. They are relocating to Beloit, and we welcome them back to Atonement.

Quilt of Holes

As I faced my Maker at the last judgment, I knelt before the Lord along with all the other souls.

Before each of us laid our lives like the squares of a quilt in many piles; an angel sat before each of us sewing our quilt squares together into a tapestry that is our life.

But as my angel took each piece of cloth off the pile, I noticed how ragged and empty each of my squares was. They were filled with giant holes. Each square was labeled with a part of my life that had been difficult, the challenges and temptations I was faced with in every day life. I saw hardships that I endured, which were the largest holes of all.

I glanced around me. Nobody else had such squares. Other than a tiny hole here and there, the other tapestries were filled with rich color and the bright hues of worldly fortune. I gazed upon my own life and was disheartened.

My angel was sewing the ragged pieces of cloth together, threadbare and empty, like binding air.

Finally the time came when each life was to be displayed, held up to the light, the scrutiny of truth. The others rose; each in turn, holding up their tapestries. So filled their lives had been. My angel looked upon me, and nodded for me to rise.

My gaze dropped to the ground in shame. I hadn't had all the earthly fortunes. I had love in my life, and laughter. But there had also been trials of illness, and wealth, and false accusations that took from me my world, as I knew it. I had to start over many times. I often struggled with the temptation to quit, only to somehow muster the strength to pick up and begin again. I spent many nights on my knees in prayer, asking for help and guidance in my life. I had often been held up to ridicule, which I endured painfully, each time offering it up to the Father in hopes that I would not melt within my skin beneath the judgmental gaze of those who unfairly judged me.

And now, I had to face the truth. My life was what it was, and I had to accept it for what it was.

I rose and slowly lifted the combined squares of my life to the light.

An awe-filled gasp filled the air. I gazed around at the others who stared at me with wide eyes.

Then, I looked upon the tapestry before me. Light flooded the many holes, creating an image, the face of Christ.

Then our Lord stood before me, with warmth and love in His eyes. He said, "Every time you gave over your life to Me, it became My life, My hardships, and My struggles.

Each point of light in your life is when you stepped aside and let Me shine through, until there was more of Me than there was of you."

May all our quilts be threadbare and worn, allowing Christ to shine through!

The new ELW books are here!

The Worship & Music Committee wants to let the congregation know that the new hymnals have arrived, and we hope to have them in the pews on June 3rd. Char Affeldt and Doris Betz are installing the name plates. We plan to have a "moving day" on Saturday, June 2nd at 9 AM. We’ll pick up the old hymnals and put them in the chapel, along with copies of older hymnals. If you want an older hymnal for yourself, either the green or red, feel free to take them. We’ll keep around 20 copies of the old books, and the rest will be recycled.

Also from Worship and Music: In the works is a fundraiser for Hands of Faith in December. David Ramsey has written a Christmas Cantata, with the idea of a performance by a mass choir from all of the Hands of Faith churches. It’s in the planning stages at this point with a tenative date of December 15th at 6 PM.

God Bless My Computer...

Dear Lord,

Every single evening as I'm lying here in bed,

This tiny little prayer keeps running through my head:

God bless all my family wherever they may be,

Keep them warm and safe from harm for they're so close to me.

And God, there is one more thing I wish that you could do;

Hope you don't mind me asking, please bless my computer too.

Now I know that it's unusual to bless a motherboard,

But listen just a second while I explain it to you, Lord.

You see, that little metal box holds more than odds and ends;

Inside those small compartments rest so many of my friends.

I know so much about them by the kindness that they give,

And this little scrap of metal takes me in to where they live.

By faith is how I know them much the same as you.

We share in what life brings us and from that our friendships grew.

Please take an extra minute from your duties up above,

To bless those in my address book that's filled with so much love.

Wherever else this prayer may reach to each and every friend,

Bless each e-mail inbox and each person who hits "send".

When you update your Heavenly list on your own Great CD-ROM,

Bless everyone who says this prayer sent up to GOD.com

Amen

Following the fellowship on the designated Sunday mornings we will be picking up our portion of Milwaukee Road. It only takes about an hour from the time we leave the church and return. The more hands the better! Wear or bring your old/work clothes to church. Jeans or shorts are appropriate and expected. Bring a pair of gloves and wear comfortable shoes. Following the pick up those who are able can go to a restaurant for a well earned breakfast!

The India Children’s Choir is coming to Beloit!

The performance will be at 7 PM,

August 2nd at Our Saviors Lutheran on Bluff Street, hosted by Atonement, Our Saviors, St. Paul Lutheran, Luther Valley and Faith Lutheran. The Choir consists of 22 boys and girls, ages 8 to 12, selected from thousands of children in schools sponsored by Bibles for the World through its Partnership Ministries in northeast India. These children are the decendants of a former headhunting tribe, which was entirely transformed by the Gospel into "Hearthunters" for Jesus Christ. They are touring America to say "Thank You" for your generosity, and to seek your partnership in the worldwide ministries of Bibles for the World. If you would like to preview the quality of the Choir’s musical, please to to www.bftw.org to view a video clip and hear what others have said about the Choir’s impact on their lives.

TIME

I knelt to pray but not for long,
I had too much to do.
I had to hurry and get to work
For bills would soon be due.
So I knelt and said a hurried prayer,
And jumped up off my knees.
My Christian duty was now done
My soul could rest at ease.....
All day long I had no time
To spread a word of cheer
No time to speak of Christ to friends,
They'd laugh at me I'd fear.
No time, no time, too much to do,
That was my constant cry,
No time to give to souls in need
But at last the time, the time to die.
I went before the Lord,
I came, I stood with downcast eyes.
For in his hands God held a book;
It was the book of life.
God looked into his book and said

"Your name I cannot find
I once was going to write it down...

But never found the time"
