Church Men's Dartball League Playoffs & Championship Series - 1997/1998

Playoffs

The Church Men's Dartball National League division playoff was played between the Messiah Chiefs and 
Atonement Renegades.  These two teams finished the season tied for first place in the National League 
with a record of 46 wins and 17 losses.  Messiah won the best of 3 games playoff series with scores 
of 4-8, 11-7 and 12-10.

The first round of the league championships were played using a wild card format.  This round consisted 
of the division champion with the best win / loss playing the second place (wild-card) team with the 
best win / loss record and the other two first place teams playing each other, each in a best of five 
series.  The Messiah Chiefs (48 - 18) defeated the Atonement Renegades (47 - 19) in four games; 6-4, 
12-4, 8-11and 11-5. The Atonement Rebels (42-18) of the Midwest League defeated Sun Valley (41-22) of 
the American League in four games; 6-3, 8-5, 2-6 and 5-0.

Championship Series

The Messiah Chiefs of the National League defeated the Atonement Rebels of the Midwest League to win 
this year's league championship best-of-seven series in five games with scores of 8-2, 6-1, 4-7, 9-6 and 11-4. 

Outstanding players in the series include:
Ken Thomson of the Messiah Chiefs (16 hits, 0.533 series batting average)
Brian Engleson of the Messiah Chiefs (14 hits, 0.424 series batting average, 9 runs batted in)
Jon Pingle of the Messiah Chiefs (14 hits, 0.424 series batting average, 8 runs batted in)
Duane Ottow of the Atonement Rebels (12 hits, 0.413 series batting average).

The annual Church Dartball League banquet will be held on Tuesday, April 14th at 6:30 p.m. at the 
Messiah Lutheran Church.  Award presentations and the annual business meeting will follow the dinner. 

All churches in the Beloit area are invited to join the league, which begins in September and runs 
through March.  Teams must have 5 to 9 players.  All games are played on Tuesday evenings.
