Upcoming Craft Fair Dates - Stop By and Visit Under the BIG GREEN UMBRELLA!

Please Note:  With two kids and two full-time jobs, we have decided to scale way back on our craft shows this year.  We will still be doing orders, though (they may take a bit longer than they used to, but we'll get to you!), and you are welcome to stop by if you are in the area (call first!  who knows where we'll be...).  If you want soap, just let us know!

We had hoped to get to the 31st Annual Mount Horeb Art Fair, Saturday-Sunday, July 19-20, 2003, but after five years there they have decided we are insufficiently a '"fine art," and turned us down - so, sorry folks!  If you find this as disappointing as we do, please let the Mt. Horeb Area Chamber of Commerce know at 608/437-5914.

Tallman Arts Festival, Sunday, August 10, 2002, tentative.
Welcome to bustling Janesville, WI!  This fine arts (and some crafts) festival is located on the grounds of the beautiful and gracious Lincoln-Tallman House, and is operated by the Rock County Historical Society as one of their big annual fundraisers.  In addition to the interesting and varied arts displayed, you can eat great food (hot festival chow, cakes, pies, ice cream, etc.), and tour the Tallman House.  And best for us...it's only 4 blocks from home!

There may be other shows in the fall - we'll keep you posted.

About our Soaps

Rock Valley Soap, located in Janesville, Wisconsin, specializes in hand-crafted all-vegetable soaps that are especially kind to the skin and fun for the nose.  Our soaps are made at home in our kitchen in small custom batches using only the finest of pure ingredients.  The method we use is called "cold process" soapmaking which allows the oils in the soap to retain their characteristic properties longer than soaps made at high temperatures (as commercial soapmakers do).

You will find that our soaps are silky and rich.  Soapmaking releases glycerin from the fat molecules - - and we leave this expensive natural product in our soaps because it's an excellent skin conditioner.  The rich suds in our bars are due to the coconut oil used in our base soap formula.  Even in hard water, this soap produces fine and plentiful suds [you can cut diamonds with our water, it's so hard!]!  And our soaps are superfatted which means that they are very mild and contain excess oils to help nourish your skin.  We use vegetable oil [soybean oil], coconut oil, and olive oil in our basic soap.  Then we add dried botanicals, essential oils (or fragrance oils), and sometimes pigments to the soaps to give them great scents, interesting textures, and a unique look.

Our packaging has an environmentally responsible, minimalist aesthetic.  Each bar is labeled only with ingredients on a thin informational strip which is adhered to the soap only by the soap itself.  No adhesives, no wasted paper.  Just what you need to know about the soap.  Removing the label strip is easy - simply dampen the paper and peel it up.

Our customers claim that the soaps are the only ones they'll use on their children's soft skins, they claim our soaps have cleared up all nature of skin problems, and we've even noticed that David's fingers no longer split in the wintertime.   Our young friend Eli always asks his mom for the Mild Child soap when he's in the tub!

+ Getting the Most From Handcrafted Soap

These soaps are labeled with a date for best use.  The soap may be used now, but as it ages, it becomes milder and hardens.  Hardened soap lasts longer in the bath.  Since this soap contains no preservatives, the oxygen in the air will eventually alter the oils in the soap.  For this reason, we recommend that you use the soap within a year of its date.  In the meantime, though, scented herbal soaps make excellent drawer and closet sachets and car scents (as Kim discovered one day).  You can also carve the soaps or cut them into shapes.

+ Why make soap?
Turns out that Kim is allergic to every sort of affordable soap out there.  Yet she remembers her grandmother making her own soap because it cost less than what she would pay at the market.  In an effort to control costs and allergens, Kim embarked upon her soapmaking odyssey, and has dragged David along.  After a lot of soapmaking research,  we settled on a remarkably mild and versatile vegetable-based soap that is rich in olive oil - much the same as the soaps made in the Mediterranean.  To protect these healthful oils, this soap is made slowly over several days at cool temperatures.

+ Why does this soap feel so nice?
A by-product of natural soap-making is glycerin.  This luxurious skin conditioner is usually removed from commercial soaps and sold because it's worth more than the soap itself.  We leave the glycerin in for good skin conditioning and that silky feel you notice after handling the soaps.

+ Suds, suds, and more suds!
Even in hard water, these soaps give a rich lather with fine bubbles.  The reason?  We use pure coconut oil in the soap to provide the good sudsing action, yet not so much that your skin dries out.  In soap, as in life, a little bit of balance is a good thing!

+ What are the colors and fragrances?
We use natural dried botanicals for color and texture - stuff like spices, herbs, and grains.  A favorite soapmaking additive is ground oatmeal and cornmeal for scrubbing.  A couple of the brilliantly-colored soaps include cosmetic pigments.  For the fragrances, I use only herbal essential oils or fine fragrance especially crafted for soaps to provide that rich, earthy scent.

+ You can get these great soaps for yourself, and your family & friends!
Ordering products from Rock Valley Soap is easy!  Our order form is available on the form below (after the catalog items are listed).  You can decide what you like and send your order in by phone (our machine is always on!), by email, or by snail mail.  All the details are available below.

Products Available

Soaps, $2.75 ea (or 5 bars for $12)
prices valid through December 2003

For Holiday Delivery 2003, please note our deadlines:
For Mail Order, Thursday, December 18th.
For Pick-Up, Saturday, December 20th.

We thank you for your business this year!

All soaps are $2.75 each and are a generously sized 4-5 oz. bar.  Or, if you order any 5, the bars are discounted to 5 for $12!  Our soaps are prepared at home from a base blend of saponified olive oil, coconut oil, and vegetable shortening.  This soap will lather like nobody's business  -even in hard water-  due to the coconut oil in the base recipe.  The soaps are all superfatted to ensure mildness and to prevent drying of the skin.  In addition, the glycerin that is naturally produced by the soap-making process is left in our soaps for its natural skin-conditioning properties.  Our soaps are labeled with ingredients and include a cure date.  Using the soap after this cure date will ensure that it is milder, harder, and longer lasting.  The soaps are best stored in open air and make great sachets while you wait to use them.  But do use them within about a year because they contain no preservatives!  We add spices and herbs for coloring, and most soaps have a bit of added sweet almond oil for extra smoothness.  For good scents, we add either all-natural essential oils or fragrance oils specially formulated for soaps.  The fragrance oils may contain synthetics.

Berry Basket Bar -  Fresh ripe berries, warmed in the sun, with maybe a dollop of vanilla cream on top!  This is the fragrance captured by this new bar which is a pretty plum color.  If you just can't wait until summer's berry days, try this substitute!

Grapefruit & Green Tea Soap -  This is a delightful scent crafted from the clean rich scent from grapefruit oil combined with the mellow notes of green tea.  This bar is pink-grapefruit colored with bits of Celestial Seasonings green tea tossed in for visual interest and mild scrubbing.

Ellen's Grapefruit Bar -  By special request, this bar contains natural grapefruit oil for fragrance, a teeny bit of litsea cubeba oil, and calendula oil for added richness.  It's been colored to look like a pink grapefruit with a blend of pigment and paprika.

Lemon Poppyseed Bar -  Inspired by Kim's favorite muffins, this bar is scented not with true lemon, but with our favorite all natural litsea cubeba oil with a touch of vanilla.  And scattered throughout...those cute and scrubby little poppyseeds.  If you're looking for a good exfoliating bar, stop right here.

Cool Cucumber  -  This delicately-colored pale green bar has that good clean cucumber scent (from a special fragrance oil) with just a tiny bit of sweetness.  Like a summer morning, this bar will invigorate with its fresh fragrance and a bit of ground peppermint for added interest.  Because of its round-the-year popularity, we've begun to offer this all the time, and not just seasonally.

Spiced Fruit Bar -  Deep brown in color, this soap smells absolutely delicious!  It's a blend of citrus oils and spices that make for a rich scent, something like a bay rum.  David dreamed up this blend in a creative mood one day.  We make this from October through March, but ask for it - we may have some in stock.

Scotch Meadow-  This is our hands-down best seller.  A very fragrant clean, fresh herbal blend that is neither masculine nor feminine.  We make this soap with ground chamomile and a blended herbal fragrance oil.

Cinnamon Peace Suds - The soap is richly scented with cinnamon oil (a natural antiseptic) and gets its beautiful brown color from ground cinnamon.  This is David's favorite because the bold cinnamon fragrance really wakes him up in the morning.

Peppermint Cleansing Bar - This soap smells clean, clean, clean!  It contains peppermint oil from a farm just south of town.  It's also got added aloe vera gel and ground peppermint leaves to make it an extra-fine soap.

Workin' Hands - This soap contains naturally antiseptic clove oil which gives a very strong warm scent.  We also toss in some ground cornmeal for scrubbing properties, so if you work with your hands, you'll love this one by your sink.

Mom's Honey Oatmeal- Kim's mom wanted this soap because she likes a simple wholesome soap.  As requested, this soap has just honey and oatmeal added to it, plus rich calendula oil for a beautiful caramel-colored soap that's great for your skin.

Amaretto Crunch Bar - Take the basic Mom's Honey Oatmeal and add a touch of bitter almond fragrance to it and you get this richly-scented bar.  All the good stuff in honey and oatmeal with a merry fragrance to boot.

Vapor Scrub Bar - By popular request!  Feeling stuffy?  Dry weather and cold-and-flu season got you down?  This soap promises a hot-shower sinus-tingling experience to get you breathing right.  This soap contains essential oils of eucalyptus and peppermint and for color, ground comfrey.

Snap Apple - This soap smells just like a freshly-cut green apple.  The fragrance oil is rounded out a bit with some pear essences for a rich effect.  The beautiful green color comes from ground comfrey.

Lush Lavender- The heavenly fragrance comes from French lavender essential oil.  This soap also contains finely ground oatmeal for our fans of oatmeal soaps.

Lemon Drop Suds - This vibrant scent comes from litsea cubeba - an essential oil that provides a rich vanilla-lemon smell without the "furniture polish" scent of true lemon oil.  It's pale yellow  gets a boost from tumbling bits of ground lemongrass.

Citrus Morning -  This citrus blend soap contains essential oils of sweet orange and litsea cubeba.  Bits of ground orange peel provide a sunny color to accent the clean fresh citrus fragrance.

Rosemary Oat Bar -  Rosemary essential oil gives a nice clean scent while ground rosemary and oatmeal provide a nice earthy color and scrubbing properties.  Truly a classic soap.

Deep Pines - A blended pine fragrance oil provides the snap and richness of pine with a sweet highlight.  Imagine a walk in a pine forest.  It's a beautiful pale green bar that contains dark flecks from ground juniper berries.

Green Tea - This delicately-scented soap really smells just like green tea!  It contains a light green tea fragrance oil and ground Celestial Seasonings green tea.  If you're a tea fan you'll love this pale green bar.

Just Plain Vanilla -  Rich vanilla fragrance oil gives this soap a warm and sweet fragrance and makes the soap a deep cocoa-brown color as it ages.  Think of a rich vanilla custard and you've got the right idea.

Chocolate Scrub Bar - This command performance bar was requested by a kid in Monroe, WI and has enchanted our chocolate lovers.  It's a rich dark bar powered by chocolate fragrance oil (not a clinging scent), cocoa powder, and wheat bran.

Mild Child -  Named in the fond hopes that all children are as mild as this bar, this is just pure clean soap.  With no added nothing, we send this soap for baby gifts.  If you are troubled by soaps, we recommend this and Mom's honey oatmeal.

Chinese Ginger-  This bar contains only ginger essential oil, sweet almond oil, and ground ginger and is a gorgeous rich golden color with a ginger scent that just won't quit.  It's spicy without being harsh, and is a real treat for your guests  and for yourself!

Gingerbread Treat- Warm and homey and sweet, this bar is sure to bring back memories of yummy treats and warm kitchens during the holiday season.  It's colored with a bit of honey and ground gingerbread spice blend.  A fall favorite.

Fresh Rain -  A great way to experience the sensation of the cool rainy seasons of spring and fall.  The color is a blue-green that comes from cosmetic pigments and ground rosemary, and a dappled surface might remind you of raindrops in a pool.

Finest Jasmine - This classic floral is produced from a combination of essential oils and fragrance oils.  No colorants are added so the bar is a clean off-white color.

Antique Rose -  You'll want to walk around with this one under your nose all day.  The bar is scented with a rich long-lived rose fragrance oil and has pigments added to give it a beautiful dusty rose color.

Pumpkin Pie -  This is the companion to the basil-licorice above.  As you may have guessed, it's the one that studies have proven will turn men on.  Maybe that's why so many babies are born in the summertime?  This bar is pumpkin colored from ground paprika and ground cinnamon, and smells just like a baked pumpkin pie.  It's been a big hit with men and women!  A fall favorite.

Applejack Bar - Smells of rich cinnamon with the irresistable yumminess of peach pie and apple pie all rolled into one.  As we roll through apple and pie season, get yourself a bar for some real inspiration!  Order some of this natural-colored soap now and beat the rush!

Back in stock!  We've got the oils again! Summer Garden Soap - A rich floral mixture of lavender, patchouli and rose geranium, this bar has been unavailable for over a year due to the lack of rose geranium oil in our suppliers.  But they have it now, and so do we!  Check out this summer essential!
